I've been knitting since a child and have made and designed many things over the years. I was taught by various members of my family.  You might want to learn without help and today there are loads of good books that can show you how.  I still use books for ideas and new pattern stitches.
 An ideal item for the beginner and one I started off with was making a very simple scarf, basically a long rectangle.  Make it en vogue by using a palette of pastel shades in blocks of color.

There's definitely a sense of spring in the air, it makes me want to start making lightweight lacy pattern cardigans in this seasons trend pastel colors, or even design a color block pattern.  Finished off with a lightweight knit scarf in a contrast pastel shade and you're bang on trend for a fraction of the price of buying ready made from the High Street.  Another advantage to making it yourself is you make it to fit you exactly, it's made to measure!
